dli project
In January 2003, the University of Kansas Museum of Anthropology was awarded a Digital Library Initiatives Internal Grant for the project entitled, Kansas City Hopewell Digitization Project. Project personnel included Dr. Mary J. Adair (Project Director), Ms. Jeannette M. Blackmar (Collection Manager), Ms. Alison Miller (Curatorial Assistant), Ms. Hokyong Choi (Curatorial Assistant), and Mr. Luis Yin (Technology Specialist). Funds were used to support the digitization of selected archaeological artifacts and associated photographs from representative sites comprising the Kansas City Hopewell collection. The primary goal of the project was to increase access to these collections to faculty, researchers, and students by making them available through the World Wide Web for use in teaching and research. Anticipated outcomes of this project include (1) stimulated research (2) means for attracting undergraduate and graduate students to the anthropological program (3) increase use in the collection by visiting scholars (4) classroom teaching enhancement through visual learning (5) greater public awareness of past cultures (6) greater awareness to a diverse audience of the Museum’s collection holdings and (7) preservation of photographs. Increasing the use of these collections through web access of digitized images of artifacts and photographs helps fulfill the mission of the Museum while retaining the security and integrity of the collections. We greatly appreciate the support of the University of Kansas Digital Library Initiatives for funding this project.
